Mid Day Meal Scheme

7.2 Best Practices

Best Practice 2

1. Title of Practice: MID DAY MEAL SCHEME

2. Objectives:

The Mid-Day Meal scheme has been started in our college with the intention of providing one meal to the needy. Donating food actually helps serve two purposes for bettering communities, though one is less obvious than other. Aside from the immediate benefits such as harmony, and friendliness. to the students of our college, the planet benefits greatly as well. The less unspoiled food that get thrown away, the less unspoiled food that is sent to a landfill where it ultimately goes to waste. Donating to the needy gives new information and reveals a different point of views about different social issues such as homelessness, hunger or poverty to the students. Donating food to the worthy people helps counter poverty, hunger and at the same time, it can improve harmony, friendliness and trust among human beings. It has been observing that generosity releases endorphins that generate feelings of calmness, peace, gratitude and satisfaction which helps in easing tension and stress. Thus students who help the needy get the benefits in terms of stronger immune system, lower heart rate, increased energy, lesser pain, and lower blood pressure. Our intention is to spread a smile.

3. The Context:

Since our institution is situated in a village, the most of the people living around the institution are daily wage holders Our volunteers identified lot of people who are suffer from illness and starvation such as old aged people who neglected by relatives, senior citizens who are from very poor background, disabled persons etc. After identified the situation, our students have discussed with college management and taken up the initiation of sponsoring food to some people. To keep these people happy in some extent, our institution decided to donate monthly food. Food donation in hospitals is a crucial aspect of healthcare that addresses the nutritional needs of patients, caregivers, and healthcare staff. It plays a significant role in supporting the overall well-being of individuals who are receiving medical treatment. Patient Recovery and well-being, Volunteer Involvement, Economic Considerations are some aspects of the context of food donation in hospitals.

4. The Practice:

The young generation have grown with ethical and moral values. They have to understand the neighbourhood problems. This mid-day meal scheme in our institution helps the student to think about others.
The HoI grants the permission to the student volunteers from every program (B.Tech., M.Tech., MBA) and staff coordinators to coordinate these activities. This committee discussed with college dignitaries and decided to donate mid-day meal on every month in Government medical college, Adoor. The Committee select a volunteer from each class and he/she was assigned to collect food from their classes. There are no specific conditions for setting the meal. Each person can bring the food according to their capacity. They can include any edible items in their carry bags. Student Coordinators collect all these food items and they will deliver directly to the hospital by using college van.

5. Evidence of Success:

Food donation does not only contribute to reduce food waste but also has the potential to positively influence the society. There are a group of students from the institution who are willing to take responsibilities of this scheme. Because they knew that the thought behind this scheme is spread a smile. They visit the hospital and share their experience to their friends. Now most of the students are willing to spend some time with these peoples. The increasing number of contributions is the proof that children are benefited by this scheme.

6. Problem Encountered & Resources Required:

The government has established some guidelines for food donations. Students’ need to be aware of these rules and to discuss them with their families is one of the main issues that arises. The most crucial aspect of food giving is hygiene. The students receive the appropriate guidance from the staff coordinators and student volunteers.

7. Notes:

Donation of food to the needy is the great way to help and support the people in their conditions. It will increase the level of prosperity and happiness.

REPORT ON MID-DAY MEAL SCHEME

The foundation of developing nations is education. An educated individual is valuable because they have better information, skills, attitudes, and values. However, education is more than just what we learn from textbooks. What sets humans apart from other earthly species is our education. Compared to an uninformed person, an educated person is more likely to develop superior moral and ethical ideals. According to our institution, these ideals must be taught by the students right on campus. Our institution has committed to engaging in numerous initiatives aimed at producing morally admirable individuals. The concept for the midday food program originated with the notion for a student charity initiative.
Government hospitals play a crucial role in providing healthcare services to a significant portion of the population, often dealing with resource constraints. Recognizing the importance of nutrition in patient recovery and overall well-being, the initiative to donate food to government hospitals has gained momentum.
This program aims to:
  • Alleviating Hunger & Malnutrition: The primary goal of donating food is to address hunger and food insecurity. By providing nutritious food to those in need, donations play a crucial role in ensuring that individuals and families have access to an adequate and balanced diet.
  • Reducing food waste: Donating excess or surplus food helps minimize food waste. Many food items that might otherwise go unused can be redirected to those who can benefit from them, thereby promoting a more sustainable and responsible approach to food consumption.
  • Promoting social responsibility: Food donations contribute to a sense of social responsibility. Individuals and organizations that donate food demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of their communities and contribute to building a more compassionate and supportive society.
  • Encouraging community engagement: Food donations foster community engagement by encouraging individuals and businesses to actively participate in helping others. It strengthens social bonds and creates a sense of shared responsibility for the welfare of the community.
  • Health & Nutrition Improvement: Nutrient-dense food donations contribute to improved health and nutrition for recipients. This is especially important for vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly, who may be at greater risk of malnutrition.
  • Educating & raising awareness: Food donation programs can serve as platforms for educating the public about issues related to hunger, food insecurity, and poverty. They raise awareness about the challenges faced by many individuals and communities.
The Mid-day meal scheme aims to improve the quality of life of needy elders and patients suffering with illness, by providing basic sustenance, so they can live active and healthy lives. The poor old age people lost traditional respect from their families. Elders are being neglected & suffering with starvation and illness. Due to the poverty, aging has health issues & psychological disorders. Some of the old aged people are on street begging & living in public places. Due to humiliations in the family some old age people are getting suicide. Also There are many rural pitiable patients who suffering from various illness who joined in government hospitals. They do not have enough money to buy medicines. The hapless elderly peoples and who are suffering from illness need timely food to prevent their hunger. Sponsoring nutritious meals every day afternoon to impoverish these peoples is the solution for this problem. This scheme stops starvation among poor people & getting hope, confidence on real life. Old age person’s health care, living conditions and life span increasing with the help of timely food donation and personal care. By this scheme many old aged persons able to eat nutritious food in time without depending on others. The perception of the community on caring old age people build positively. Human rights violation against old age people will be reduced. This scheme also considers poor peoples. By providing nutritious food our students can help them to recover their health. Also this scheme solves the problem of poor patients, who come from faraway places of different districts.

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS

There weren’t many students involved in this program when it first began. However, the college administration provided a chance for each student to visit these individuals and educate them on the value of food donation. As a result, a large number of pupils came forward and assumed personal responsibility for gathering wholesome meals. Donating provides our children with a platform to learn about the issues that affect them. Additionally, they can spend meaningful time with these individuals. They developed a positive outlook and made an effort to learn what it takes to be a decent person. It has been found that these donations promote increased levels of prosperity and boost health happiness, cooperation, goodwill and strong communities.
Serving of food is not restricted to any category; but those who are in need can avail this service. Majority of the patients are from faraway places and mostly from economically and socially backward strata of the society and our food supply is very much appreciated by them.
Volunteering of food donation can be a rewarding experience with several benefits for volunteers.
The benefits are:
  • Sense of purpose & fulfillment
  • Personal growth
  • Increased Empathy and Awareness
  • Positive impact on mental health
  • Learning & Education
  • Building a stronger community
  • Team Building
