IN THE 2019-20 ACADEMIC THE NATURE CLUB OF SNIT, ADOOR WAS MODIFIED TO SNIT SOCIO-ECO CLUB NAMED AS “ LIVE LIKE ME”
Department of Civil Engineering organized a campaign on plastic free earth, in accordance with vision of AICTE to alleviate from all affiliated institutions.
The plastic free campaign started with a technological level awareness programme at community level. Awareness classes were organized and conducted by our students in nearly 12 schools within Pathanamthitta District. Followed by this there was an idea collection contest based on the theme “ how to eliminate plastic from our daily lives”. A large pool of ideas were collected. Young minds had a genuine concern about our environment. For the successful completion of the awareness college authorities and PTA members have extended immense support.
As a second part of campaign :
1.Shortlisted students from the pool of ideas collected were selected for second stage college level programme. (Tentative date 17/01/2019)
2.Plogging programme by our students and used plastic bottles thus collected will be used to create vertical garden at college.
Selected students campaigned creating awareness among all the students and staff inside the campus. Students were divided into groups and each group was assigned to specified schools. Awareness was made on all the harmful effects of plastic on environment and need to avoid its use. Till now, twelve schools are covered under this program.
Recognition for our programme: Greenworms Eco solutions ltd. – A company based at Kozhikode recognized our work and have extended their support for our campaign
As our college focus on maximum reduction in plastic in campus we provide steel plates, glasses and paper straws in canteen and introduced paper plates in snacks bar. Also, college encourages the use of handmade paper pens. As we are concerned about our environment, we are in a mission for paper free campus.
Students and staffs were counseled against the use of plastic in the campus. Students can make use of the water cooler to refill their water bottles and are advised not to use plastic bottles. The use of plastic bags is avoided in the campus and the authority is planning to declare the entire campus as “No Plastic Zone.”. Students and staffs are motivated to use jute bags or cotton bags.
The paper pen making was one of our SOCIO-ECO activities. The Nature Club , SNIT Adoor Purchased 1000 pens from a physically handicapped entrepreneur thus paved a way to enlighten stigma in society and this has set a light in the minds of students to work out the strategies on their own. This venture by students was supported by the management wholeheartedly.
Paperless office:
For this, the request from students, teaching and non-teaching staff are collected through online medium. Majority of paper works are digitalized. The intimation of PTA meetings, students notices, staff notices are given through messages. With the sophistication of modern hardware, software and internet services 75% digitization process is growing in our college. Going paperless is a greener option than using reams of paper and may cut down on overhead expenses , also make it eco-friendly
As a part of extension activity of “plastic free campaign” CEPTA, the civil engineering association of Sree Narayana Institute of Technology hosted a one day seminar on the topic “ Green Technologies for sustainable Environment” on 5th March 2020.

On the The Environment day 2020 we adhered to the theme “ BIODIVERSITY” and only one earth was our motto. More than 100 different species of flowering plant was planted across the college campus and nearly 10 different species of fruit plants were planted. As our students are staying back home due to Covid –19 breakdown, they were encouraged to plant tress and vegetables within their premises. We received immense participation from student community. Thus the collective effort led to the attainment of our mission (planting 1000 trees / plants).
In addition to this various department students and teachers created videos to create awareness among community.
